The Evolutionary Origins of Psychedelics_1

Humans rely on a bevy of strange natural chemicals to liven up our food and drink, to endure pain, and to change our perspective. We use caffeine from coffee, tea, and yerba mate to stimulate our bodies and minds, capsaicin from red pepper flakes or isothiocyanates in horseradish or wasabi to enliven our food with spice, and codeine or morphine to endure the pain of injuries and surgeries.

Lately, though, some have also turned to psychedelics like psilocybin to change their perspectives. In fact, researchers are beginning to test if they could serve as new treatments for mental health disorders.

That said, the bigger question is why plants, mushrooms, microbes and even some animals make chemicals like these with life-saving, life-enhancing, and even life-ending prop…

The Las Vegas Shooting and Our Age of Anger

Anger is one of humanity’s elemental particles. It’s small, unstable, simple to the point of crude. And yet, in the right densities and balances, it’s fundamental to who we are. Lately, in America at least, that balance has been wildly off.

Nobody was responsible for the slaughter in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 except the monster who pulled the trigger — not policymakers in Washington, not anger-stokers on cable TV, not even the gunmakers who manufactured the instruments that made the carnage possible. The killer did the killing — period. But that killing came in a context, and that context is anger.

Americans have made something of a fetish of our rage of late — a fact that’s even been leaking into our language. The base is never just &#822…

The Thrilling Story of the First Mission to the Moon

When the history of human space flight in the 20th century is finally, fully written, it will not be the triumphant lunar landing of Apollo 11 or the survival drama of Apollo 13, that emerges as the most significant of them all. It will be Apollo 8, the first lunar orbital mission — the moment human beings became a two-world species, wrenching ourselves away from the gravitational hold of Earth and sailing across the deep waters of deep space. That the mission occurred in 1968—the bloodiest year in modern history—and redeemed that year with the iconic Earthrise photo and the historic reading of Genesis from lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, was not part of its original objectives but was among its greatest achievements.

In the 1990s, I wrote the story o…

The COP28 Outcomes Business Leaders Are Watching For

(To get this story in your inbox, subscribe to the TIME CO2 Leadership Report newsletter here.)

The U.N. climate conference known as COP28 officially kicked off this afternoon in Dubai with more corporate executives and big players in the financial sector present than in any such meeting before. Much of their attention on the ground will focus on the private sector announcements made and deals struck, but there’s a reason for private sector folks to pay attention to the seemingly wonky official negotiations taking place between countries in Dubai’s Expo City convention center.

For many businesses, the conversations can seem overly procedural and disconnected from the day-to-day reality of cutting a firm’s emissions. And yet these negotiations can move the marke…

Amazon customer helpline not required, says Europe’s top court in boost for e-commerce

Amazon found itself in the dock after the German Federal Union of Consumer Organisations and Associations said its German website breached the country’s consumer protection laws by not informing consumers in a clear and comprehensible manner about its telephone and fax numbers.Amazon’s automated call-back facility and an online chat service were not sufficient to show that it had lived up to its legal obligation, the federation said.

The Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union rejected the arguments.”An e-commerce platform such as Amazon is not obliged in all cases to make a telephone number available to consumers before the conclusion of a contract,” judges said. The court said other factors need to be taken into account apart from consumer rights.”It is necessary …

Citigroup heads to trial seeking to undo nearly $900 million Revlon blunder

The unusual case could provide insight into Wall Street banks’ relationships with clients, and guidance on steps that banks must take to safeguard how money is moved. It stemmed from an Aug. 11 incident where Citigroup mistakenly wired $893 million to Revlon’s lenders, appearing to pay off a loan that was not due until 2023, rather than a planned $7.8 million interest payment.

The bank had been acting as the loan agent for Revlon, which did not have enough cash to prepay the loan. While some 200 Revlon lenders have repaid Citigroup, the bank is suing hedge fund and asset managers such as Brigade Capital Management, HPS Investment Partners and Symphony Asset Management to recover $501 million that it said remains due.U.Sคำพูดจาก

France plans fashion revolution with climate-impact labels

Such trade-offs make it tricky to figure out the real sustainability rating of clothes — but brands in Europe will soon have no choice.Next year, France will pass a decree that will require every item of clothing sold in the country to carry a label detailing its precise climate impact.คำพูดจาก สล็อตเว็บตรง

An exact timetable has yet to be finalised, but the labels are expected to quickly become mandatory, and the European Union is mulling a similar rule for the entire bloc. For clothing firms, that means juggling many different and conflicting data points: Where and how were its raw materials grown? What was used to colour it? How far did it travel? Was the factory po…
